That was quite the article but i surprisingly found it very interesting. I think it should be a requirement to take algebra because it extends your knowledge and most jobs out in the real world will require you to have background with math. to move up the ladder in the job you are at, you might have to be required to have an even higher knowledge of math. I agree with the statement "I'm only taking this class because the university makes me!" the decisions you make in your life are made by yourself not by anyone else.
I agree with this article in almost every way. Algebra IS used in everyday life in its simpler forms. Also just having basic understandings of more complex than normal math is beneficial because it makes you more math literate and capable of understanding how things work more and improves your problem solving skills. I dont think everyone needs algebra 2 or calculus but algebra is definitely beneficial to the average person. Besides, basic algebra is just common sense and anyone who complains about it being too difficult is just looking for an excuse to be lazy and get a bad grade.
I completely agree with this article. Granted, for me it's a little bit different because Algebra is something that I'm going to use on a regular basis for my career. But even for people who won't, taking Algebra won't hurt you. Like the article said, people are going back to school all the time now. Some go to further their degrees or some do a complete 180 in their career. And, even if that happens 40 years from now, those people will STILL be required to take Algebra because, if nothing else, it opens people's mind and makes them think. Algebra is a building block for a whole other realm of mathematics, and without it, no one will ever be able to get there.
I agree with this article in every way possible. I especially agree with the paragraph titled, "Having to take algebra is stupid". I think it is spot on because students these days really do believe that they don't need math and they are just so lazy in everything they do. They would rather barely get by instead of exceeding what is expected of them. They are always looking for the easy ways out of things. Algebra isn't just needed to learn how to do it, but it helps with learning lessons. You have to be perseverant and willing to work. It isn't something that you can just "wing" and get by with. It also helps to understand other parts of mathematics and teaches you how to work things out. Even if someone doesn't go on into college or something, algebra is a basic knowledge that widens their background skills. It provides more opportunities to people in everyday life.
I completely agree with this article. Algebra is used in everyday life by everyone, whether they realize it or not. These skills are important to acquire whether you are trying to pursue a career centered on mathematics or not. Taking algebra teaches a student perseverance and other problem solving skills. Other important knowledge can be gained, besides just algebra. Like Aly said, even if a student isn't planning on going on to attend college, learning algebra can provide more opportunities and broaden horizons.
I don't like this article very much, and no its not because I just don't want to take math. This article is not very good because there was no research or statistics used to back this persons opinions. Its all this article was, opinionated. Yes there can be an argument made that math is needed for your future, but this article isn't it. There also can be arguments made that making algebra a requirement greatly hurts this nation's students. Algebra is often one of the only reason a student cant graduate or continue their education. This article shows why algebra may be hurting students. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/opinion/sunday/is-algebra-necessary.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0#commentsContainer
I agree with this article. Algebra may not be used by everybody but it is needed like it said, to get your degree, so it is important. Even if it us not something that you will need for your career you will most likely use it in your lifetime. I think it was right when it said students argue about it because they are too lazy to do it, or it's too hard. Not everything in life is just going to be handed to you, you're going to have to work for it and it won't always be easy.
